COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM
COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM
Family Service Centre is involved in developmental projects in the urban slum
communities of South Mumbai and in the distant suburbs in Uttan, with a view of
providing a positive environment for the holistic development of the community. Over
the years, FSC has had a paradigm shift from welfare based programs to
developmental and capacity building programs as these are more sustainable and
helps to strengthen the community from within. Keeping in mind the above, various
programs are conducted to reinforce our objectives.
The population in the Colaba and Cuffe Parade communities in South Mumbai
largely comprise migrants from rural areas who have moved to Mumbai with the
hope to have a better earning. This move comes along with challenges such as
difficulty in finding suitable jobs, place to reside, coping with the city’s high cost of
living and so on. Many a times, if they are not able to achieve this, they are
disappointed, leading to depression, substance abuse and in some cases wrongful
means of earnings. As the parents are not able to provide the necessary
environment, facilities and opportunities to their children, children too are not able to
break the vicious cycle of poverty and hopelessness.
Uttan is situated in the Thane District of Maharashtra. It is a little seaside town
whose economy thrives largely on the resident ‘Koli’ fishing community, who are
basically involved in fishing. The place has a unique eco-system due to its
geographic location, which has also given rise to a distinctive life style, culture,
customs and beliefs. After successful community intervention work in Colaba and
Cuffe Parade, FSC implemented Community Outreach Projects in a few villages in
Uttan in 2009. FSC’s interventions in the areas of Health, Nutrition, Education,
Women’s Empowerment, Welfare and Developmental activities contribute to the
overall development of community.
